Explanations for Wekri Psychology

The Wekri are a major alien species from the planet Kemuna in the Algactir System. Kemuna was a small, crater-ridden world circled by a dense ring of organic materials and primitive life-forms called the Shemnu Ring. Twice per Kemunan year, the organisms in the Shemnu Ring expelled fertilized eggs, which landed on the surface and grew into aggressive flowering vines that, if successfully pollinated, would launch spores back up into the ring.

Proto-Wekri evolved in the craters and tunnels of the pumice-like ground, rising up twice a year to feast on the organic rain. Beneath the surface, their vine-like tentacles interacted with the flowering vines, drawing nutrients from them and altering their genetic dispositions so their descendants would aim for the craters where the proto-Wekri dwelt. Competition for food resulted in the Wekri developing intelligence, the better to combat one-another in their underground struggles for vine manipulation.

However, as Wekri intelligence increased, so too did their ability to communicate with one-another. Though their "heads" were isolated aboveground, their tentacles learned to speak to one-another, eventually producing a vast underground communication network across their entire world. As the Wekri grew more intelligent and interconnected, they threatened to form a gestalt intellect. The Asmids, seeing a future threat using their divinatory powers, sent a plague to sunder the Wekri and prevent the emergence of a single, unified overmind.

By that time, Wekri technology had advanced to the point where they could escape their damaged world using spacecraft. Using borrowed and developed technology, they fled to other worlds in the Kabacta Rift, formed more traditional societies. There they struggled to recreate the conditions of their ruined homeworld, thwarted whenever they grew close by attacks by Asmids and their servitor races.

In the new kalpa, Wekri have made tremendous advances in psychology and genetics, especially since many still possess rudimentary telepathy, intuitive genetic knowledge, or a kind of "organic telekinesis" that lets them manipulate living matter from a distance. Nonetheless, they have been unable to recapture the sense of connection found in their earlier lives. This feeling, called Omphosa, and recalled by all Wekri, dominates their personality and fills them with restlessness and regret.
